Real Madrid should be major players in the next two summer transfer window after going quiet in 2020 and 2021, with Eduardo Camavinga standing out as the only signing made with a transfer fee. Even in 2022, Real will sign Kylian Mbappe for free, though there are plenty of other players they are considering signing. Aurelien Tchouameni and Erling Haaland are among them.
When it comes to targets for the future, Real Madrid are eyeing more than just Haaland and Mbappe in the attack. There is Endrick of Palmeiras, and Bayer Leverkusen’s sensational Florian Wirtz is also squarely on the Royal White radar.
Madridistas know that Florentino Perez will always be after forwards, but they would like to see Real Madrid invest in the defense and midfield for the future. Tchouameni is the main man in midfield, but there are honestly bigger concerns in the back four, specifically at right back due to Dani Carvajal’s injuries.
Real Madrid need another option, and Alvaro Odriozola may not be adequate. At right back, Pedro Porro is easily the favored option, but he will be expensive. And highly sought-after. Noussair Mazraoui is an alternative for free.
Jeremie Frimpong has six assists as a right back so far this season
However, if Los Blancos want to add another right back to their radar for the future, then they can look no further than one of Wirtz’s teammates at Bayer Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong.
The ex-Celtic man may be in the shadow of Wirtz and top-scorer Patrik Schick, but he is also having a great time in his first season in the Bundesliga.
With one goal and six assists, Frimpong is putting up much better attacking numbers than any fullback associated with Madrid, including the on-loan Odriozola at Fiorentina.
Per WhoScored.com, the 21-year-old is averaging two dribbles completed per game and 1.8 fouls drawn per game in league play. Frimpong is adding 2.5 dribbles completed per game and 1.5 key passes per game in the Europa League, which is a competition we are familiar with seeing him excel in.
Defensively, Frimpong is still developing, but there are also encouraging numbers there. In the Bundesliga, he is averaging 1.3 tackles per game and 0.7 interceptions per game despite only being dribbled past 0.5 times per match. Frimpong is adding 0.3 blocks per game and 1.4 clearances per game in the highly-attacking, fast-paced Bundesliga.
Bayer Leverkusen play thrilling attacking football. They are right there with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the league table, and they are just as delightful to watch as the two traditional powerhouses of the German top-flight.
Frimpong is important to what Bayer do offensively with his ability to support attacks, carry the ball, and find a delicious final cross. Schik has benefited greatly from Wirtz’s playmaking, but he can also thank Frimpong’s tireless runs and teasing deliveries.
Real Madrid need a better crosser and attacking presence on the right. Frimpong has the quality and work rate to be a fit for Madrid. He is much better at these traits than Odriozola, whose pace and attacking verve are usually seen as what carries him.
Though not a big name, certainly not on Wirtz’s level in hype, Frimpong is an intriguing young fullback who should be on the Madrid radar heading into the 2022 summer transfer market.
