Real Madrid Transfers: The latest club interested in Luka Jovic is his best bet
Luka Jovic has the talent to be a top striker in European football, even at the Champions League level. But it is becoming clear that he will not be able to fulfill that potential at Real Madrid.
Not only is he stuck behind Karim Benzema in the short-term, but in the long-term, it seems as if Madrid are prioritizing other players. Kylian Mbappe could play up top, for example, but it is no secret that Real dream of acquiring Erling Haaland with Mbappe. And the No. 9 would be Haaland’s – and Haaland’s alone – to own. Perhaps for the next decade-plus.
Real Madrid will need to find a suitable destination for Jovic, who won’t leave for just any opportunity. Jovic was a top striker for Eintracht Frankfurt before his 60 million euro move to the Santiago Bernabeu, and he can be a 20-goal player for another club hoving around fourth.
That kind of club is exactly who is now emerging as being interested in the Serbian international. Via Portuguese paper A Bola (undoubtedly familiar with him from his time at Benfica), Serie A club Atalanta is interested in Luka Jovic.
Luka Jovic could fit Atalanta’s attackers well
Though this information cannot necessarily be taken at face value, Atalanta is not the first club in Italy to be linked to Jovic, who has been linked to both Milan clubs in the past. Whispers from Fiorentina and even Napoli were once mentioned, though neither seem like options now with Piatek and Osimhen playing starring roles.
Atalanta have their own great forwards, namely Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata. They showed ambition in the latest transfer window, signing one of Serie A’s most exciting players in Sassuolo’s Jeremie Boga. They have a rigid structure based on development within Gian Piero Gasperini’s innovative tactical system, and therefore they do not spend much money. However, they have money and are willing to buy the right players, as evidenced by the Boga purchase.
Jovic could fit well in a system where he can play off other forwards and midfielders. Atalanta play very fluid football, and Jovic’s elegant skill-set can fit well with this highly-technical side.
We will have to see how interested Atalanta truly are, but Real Madrid’s former Champions League opponents look like a stellar fit on paper. Jovic won’t have many options this summer if he is to leave and make way for Haaland, so Atalanta’s interest will be important for both club and player to monitor.
