2. Alvaro Odriozola

With reports surfacing that Real Madrid will trust Dani Carvajal as their right-back, Alvaro Odriozola’s performances at Fiorentina must be monitored more carefully. He was signed as a young right-back sensation from Real Sociedad. However, he has never looked like staking claim to a spot in the Real Madrid team.

Inconsistent performances could be attributed to a lack of minutes. Therefore this season, Real Madrid has loaned him out to Fiorentina in Seria A who have been playing some exciting football off late. Till now Odriozola has featured in 20 Seria A games. He has slowly and steadily cemented his place as a starter in the Italian club.

Odriozola’s offensive ability was never in doubt. It was his positional awareness and overall defensive solidity that came under scrutiny. Real Madrid would hope that this loan spell reinvigorates his lost confidence. They desperately need a reliable backup to the injury-prone Dani Carvajal. Will Odriozola be the answer next season?

1. Brahim Diaz

22-year-old Brahim Diaz occupies the top spot among the loanees this season. Even though his performances have tapered off a bit due to injuries and COVID-19 in the last month or so, he has been the most impressive and arguably the most promising of the players loaned out this season.

After impressing during his first stint with AC Milan in the 2020-21 season, he decided to stay at the Italian capital for two more seasons. AC Milan rewarded Brahim with a no.10 Jersey. He has occupied that role in the team with aplomb.

Brahim is a class act. He has the vision of a midfielder and dribbling of a winger. The no.10 role seems to suit him the best as he can cut open the opposition defenses in transition and feed big strikers like Zlatan and Giroud playing in front of him. He also has a knack for scoring crucial goals.

The obstacle for Brahim returning to Real Madrid is that we do not have a designated No.10 role in the team and Brahim is ill-suited to play in a midfield three. However, he can be quite impactful as a right-winger cutting inside to shoot and find empty spaces. The right-wing anyways has been an Achilles heel for Real Madrid with no player able to cement his place definitively. Brahim’s loan spell ends in 2023. Will AC Milan exercise their right to buy and keep the player or will Real Madrid bring the talented Spaniard back to the team?
