Bayern Munich FW Serge Gnabry

Real Madrid have had a lot of success signing Bayern Munich stars over the years. Toni Kroos was a great player for Bayern who became one of the best midfielders of his era at Real Madrid after making the leap when Die Roten would not pay him his worth in wages.

David Alaba, even just months into his Madrid career, already looks like a similarly great signing. The man has been indispensable in central defense, somehow filling the defensive, attacking, and leadership qualities left by one of the GOATs, Sergio Ramos.

Could Serge Gnabry be the next? At times, the Bayern winger has been outright dominant. There was even a period of time in 2018-2019 when Gnabry was Bayern’s best player. Yes, he was outperforming Robert Lewandowski for a few months before Lewa turned it up in a big way in 2019-20 and 2020-21 with two all-time great seasons at striker.

Gnabry has been one of the best players in Germany for years, even before he joined Bayern full-time as a standout for Hoffenheim and Werder Bremen.

But Gnabry could leave Bayern, just as Thiago Alcantara and David Alaba have in recent years. The 26-year-old is entering the prime of his career and ready to cash in. His contract expires at the end of 2022-23, and it seems like he is playing things coy with Bayern.

There is a very real possibility Gnabry could be sold. He would leave as a free agent in 2023 if no deal is reached, and while Bayern have now let three high-profile free agents go in recent years (add Dortmund-bound Niklas Sule to the list), maybe they would want to sell to make sure they get some money for such a high-upside forward?

Gnabry would only come into play on a transfer fee as a winger option if Real Madrid do not sign both Haaland and Mbappe. He could also come into play as a free agent, regardless. Perez has to know how much quality Gnabry has as a versatile weapon who can score goals, assist, and embarrass defenders. He is a star at Bayern who could reach a different profile in Madrid.
