At first, it looked like Real Madrid were headed for another disappointing result. They surrendered a penalty early in the match, as Dani Carvajal was once again the villain with an ill-advised challenge on fellow LaLiga veteran David Silva. Mikel Oyarzabal dispatched the penalty with such aplomb that even an outstretched Thibaut Courtois, who had saved his previous three penalties, could do nothing about the strike.

Los Blancos had some bright moments, but they were just missing that killer edge and seemed destined to trod into the second half with a 1-0 deficit in front of their home fans against a very game Real Sociedad side.

Instead, the Real Madrid midfield had other plans.

First, it was Eduardo Camavinga. We all know about the young man’s world-class potential. A scoring hero on his debut at the Bernabeu against Celta Vigo, Camavinga truly outdid himself. He saw he had the space and confidently sent a rocket, leaving Alex Remiro with less than zero chance of getting to it.

And thus, it was 1-1.

Real Madrid’s midfielders changed the course of the game with their goals

That goal is one of the best we have seen in LaLiga this season. But just three minutes later, Luka Modric scored a goal that was just as satisfying, even if he was a little bit closer to the goal.

Modric unleashed a devastating strike with power and movement into the left corner of the net, using his weaker (but by no means weak!) left foot to get the ball around Pacheco. It was a vintage strike from Lukita, who has so often scored worldies for Real Madrid.

You can watch a video of the goal below.

What made the goal more satisfying was the fact that Madrid had their 2-1 goal, scored within seconds of the first, annulled due to a narrow “armpit” offsides call against star striker Karim Benzema.

So Modric took it upon himself to make sure Real Madrid would have a 2-1 lead at the Bernabeu by scoring a delightful goal from beyond the box.
