Real Madrid president Florentino Perez knows he has a very important summer transfer window ahead of him this year. After not making an expensive superstar signing in the last two windows – David Alaba and Eduardo Camavinga were the additions in 2021 after NO signings in 2020 – Perez has his eyes on quite literally the two best young players on the planet.
Perez is ready for a Galactic summer, but there are other key things on his to-do list as president of the club as he looks to set up the new era with a new Bernabeu.
Here are five things Perez must accomplish this summer.
Sort out the European Super League drama
This one is sort of like eating your broccoli first before you get to the good stuff. Nobody wants to talk about the European Super League, but it is this cloud hanging over Florentino Perez right now. We have heard discussions of the league still existing but with new conditions, such as removing the idea of there being permanent members and creating a “second tier” of the league.
Fans want to know if this is actually going to happen or if it is a ploy to get UEFA to change its awful proposal for a new format of the Champions League that will contain a lot of meaningless matches.
Madridistas seem to favor the European Super League for three reasons. Firstly, it would benefit their own club. Secondly, it is Perez’s idea, and he is their club’s president. And thirdly, many are genuinely tired of UEFA and want to see the biggest clubs in the world play against each other.
Real Madrid need some clarity. The players, the people in the building need to know where Real stands and what competitions they will be in. And when. The summer is the time to get all that sorted. And that is squarely Perez’s job.
