Real Madrid Transfers: 5 players who can replace Luka Jovic in the squad
3. Getafe ST Borja Mayoral
Similar to Juanmi Latasa, Getafe’s Borja Mayoral could also be an option for Real Madrid who would be light on the club’s pockets. He is after all a Real Madrid loanee playing his football with Getafe. Originally on loan at AS Roma, he is having a subsequent loan spell with Getafe. He is scheduled to return in June 2022 although there is an option to buy for Roma, per Transfermarkt.
Mayoral’s main problem at Real Madrid was with the number of players ahead of him in the pecking order. He is a great player who is very adept at doing his job, which is primarily scoring goals. In 2020/21 he scored 10 goals and assisted two in the Serie A for Romas. This season so far, he has had six appearances for Getafe and has either scored or assisted in four of them. He is indeed making the most out of his limited opportunities.
Now, with the departure of Luka Jovic seeming inevitable and Mariano Diaz being a deadweight for the club, things could look up for Mayoral. He can be the ideal backup to Karim Benzema and we know for a fact that he is a talented player who has proven his scoring abilities in different parts of the world. He is a natural striker and scoring comes naturally to him.
Mayoral is an attractive option if Real Madrid chooses not to go for flashy transfers and stick to options that make economic sense and serve them well at the same time. That said, things could look up for Mayoral if and only if no other striker is signed in the summer. Mayoral has always been considered excess to requirements at Real Madrid and he could very well be considered in the same category again if another striker (read: Erling Haaland) joins in the summer.
