Real Madrid and Barcelona are no strangers to a transfer battle. After all, both teams are in hot pursuit of Erling Haaland, and while Los Blancos have the clear advantage there, the Mino Raiola track is one reason for Madridistas to quietly keep an eye on La Blaugrana.
But both clubs will also be involved in the battle to sign another big-name attacking player, though he would likely become available next summer.
Serge Gnabry and Bayern Munich are at the negotiating table, but both sides have not seemed to come any closer to an agreement. Bayern are already weighing the contract renewals of other key players, including another winger who has been more consistent than Gnabry in Kingsley Coman.
According to a report from Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Real Madrid and Barcelona are both “keen” on the talented attacking player. Both clubs are reportedly eyeing Gnabry’s contract situation with Bayern, and because Gnabry is aware of this, he is keeping his demands high.
Serge Gnabry could become a Real Madrid player…or rival
So Gnabry could become a free agent in 2023, and we all know how much Real Madrid love their big-name free agents. David Alaba joined in 2021 for free, and Kylian Mbappe is on his way in 2022. Of course, Barcelona are even more active in the free-agent market, having just signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and with the likes of Noussair Mazraoui and Andreas Christensen in their sights for 2022.
As we saw with Alaba’s availability and even before that when Toni Kroos transferred to Real, Bayern drive a hard bargain at the negotiating table. They stick to the wages they are willing to offer and do not often compromise.
Therefore, Gnabry really could become available to Los Blancos. If there is space for him by then, we will have to see, because Real’s priority is to add Mbappe and Haaland to the attack. Both of them. That does not even consider other young talents on the wings in backup roles like Takefsua Kubo, Brahim Diaz, Peter Federico, and current first-team man Rodrygo Goes. Barcelona have made a lot of signings in the attack, but, realistically, Gnabry could have a better shot at becoming a Madrid rival than player. Barça could use his star quality.

Gnabry is so good, though, that he is worth watching. Though he has been inconsistent in 2021/22, we cannot forget how good he was in the previous seasons, including when he skyrocketed in importance during a (relatively speaking) tough 2018/19 campaign. Gnabry is class. Just look at what he did in the Bundesliga before he joined Bayern as a Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim player.
