Real Madrid Transfers: A top young CB target may now be off the table

Real Madrid are on the hunt for a new centre-back in the summer. It’s clear that Real Madrid cannot rely on only three centre-backs for the entire season, even though it has been working so far. They need a more reliable, third choice centre-back behind David Alaba and Eder Militao, because even though Nacho Fernandez is usually reliable, he has not been so this season.

So, there are a few players I would’ve gone with, personally. One of the first ones that come to mind is Wesley Fofana, the young centre-back from France who currently plays for Leicester City.

Real Madrid were linked with him in the past, and to be honest, it would’ve been great to have him as a third choice centre-back now, and have him become a starter in a few years’ time. But, that’s probably off the table now.

Wesley Fofana signed an extension with Leicester City, keeping him there until 2027

Fofana signed a whole five-year extension with 12th placed Leicester, it’s pretty wild. Real Madrid have been giving those out to the young players in the squad as well, to keep them around so that they’re able to lead the club into the next era.

But, if Fofana was to arrive, he would’ve been a very big part of that era. He’s a great player that doesn’t really have any glaring weaknesses. The Frenchman is still only 21 years old, and it’s really surprising how mature his game is.

Unfortunately, Real Madrid would have to look elsewhere for a young talented centre-back, at least for now. It’s a bummer, really. Fofana could’ve had an excellent partnership with Eder Militao, but I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.

Who knows, maybe in a couple of years, Fofana changes his mind about the team. Because let’s be real, even though Leicester City are a very good team, they’re still not the best, certainly not this season, and Fofana would want a bigger challenge at some point. But, like with so many other players, the timelines have to match.

Real Madrid would have to want him at the same time Fofana becomes available in the future for it to work. Otherwise, Fofana would just be another Odegaard, Reguilon or Hakimi: The one that got away.
