Real Madrid‘s Brazilian sensation Vinícius Júnior has taken the world by storm this season. With 16 goals and 12 assists already this term, the 21-year old has outdone his previous three seasons combined.

It’s pretty clear that Vini Jr. is one of the best players this season, not just for Real Madrid, but in the world. There is a different aura around him whenever he has played.

He has developed brilliant chemistry with Karim Benzema in attack. Unlike previous seasons, there is no debate about the first-choice left winger this season. Vini. Jr has made that spot his own. No one else comes even close.

All of these things are enough to describe someone who’s a star in the team. And yes, it is true that the Brazilian has completed the transition from ‘the next big thing’ to ‘the big thing.’

Vinicius Jr.’s mentality continues to set him apart

However, the former Flamengo starlet thinks otherwise.

In an interview with Spanish magazine Madridista Real, Vinícius Júnior was asked: “At only 21 years old you are already one of the stars of the team. How do you imagine your future in Madrid? Do you see yourself capable of leading the team in a few years?”

Here’s his reply to that question:

"“I don’t consider myself a star. This locker room is full of Champions and all possible titles. I am not a star. Stars are Marcelo, Casemiro, Luka (Modric), Nacho, Toni, Karim… Next to him I’m not a star. I am a player who learns what he can from them.”"

This statement shows that Vini Jr. is keeping his feet on the ground. At 21, he has already surpassed the 150-appearance mark for Real Madrid, becoming the first player in the 21st century to do so for Los Blancos. Even during a season where he is clearly one of the best players for Carlo Ancelotti, he is shying away from considering himself a “star” of the team.

Such an attitude can take the Brazilian a long, long way in his career. We’ve often seen players who keep their heads in the cloud and lose their way.

Madridistas can only hope that the winger can carry on with this kind of form in the coming seasons and establish himself as a leader of the team. Only time can tell what he can become at Real Madrid. But one thing’s for sure. And that is that he is a star.
