Real Madrid and Manchester City also lead battle for a top midfielder
Real Madrid fans are probably still riding the high of the iconic comeback win over PSG in the Champions League. I don’t blame anyone for doing so. Even I am one of those fans. But, there is more good news, at least according to a report.
Real Madrid are looking to reinforce the midfield next season, as they want to build for the future as well as keep things going for the present. They are interested in a lot of midfielders like Florian Wirtz, Aurelien Tchouameni, and a couple of others as well.
But, according to a report from Foot Mercato, Real Madrid are battling with Manchester City for the signature of Youri Tielemans for next season.
Youri Tielemans dreams of moving to Real Madrid, according to the report
There are many players like that, honestly. I don’t blame him.
No, but seriously, it seems like these two clubs go at each other for every big player. According to many reports, Real Madrid and Manchester City are favorites for Erling Haaland as well. Now, you add Tielemans to the mix, it gets even more interesting. This is much more open, considering there are other clubs trying for his signature still, like Barcelona, Manchester United and Arsenal. But these two clubs are the clear favorites so far.
Real Madrid obviously need a midfielder, but their need also rests on how long Modric and Kroos can go on for. Luka Modric is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down even at the age of 36, and from the looks of it, he can probably go on for another couple of years.
Would Tielemans be down to waiting for his chance at the club? Toni Kroos, even though he is also playing at a very high level, has always talked about wanting to retire early. He doesn’t plan on playing till his late 30s, and his current contract expires in 2023. So, even then, Tielemans would have to fight for his spot for at least a year before he gets it. But I am not even ruling out a one-year extension, because of the level Kroos is playing at.
This is probably why Real Madrid go for young(er) midfielders. They don’t mind waiting for their chance to show the coach what they can do, and generally accept a bench role. But Tielemans, even though he is young, is a well-established midfielder in one of the biggest leagues in the world. He’s really, really good already, and I don’t know if he’d be as open to accepting a lesser role as others.
The price tag is obviously an issue as well. There are reports about Real Madrid not being able to sign any other player if they go for both Haaland and Mbappe. If that is true, then Manchester City would probably land Tielemans. But even with them, there are so many fantastic midfielders in the squad. I can imagine one or two would have to leave so that Tielemans could become a full-fledged starter. There are rumors about Bernardo Silva leaving, (he was linked to Real as well) but again, we can’t know for certain until it actually happens.

I’d love Tielemans at Real Madrid. I think he’d be an excellent purchase, but as I’ve said with so many other players, the timelines have to match, and the player needs to be willing to fight for his spot.
