Real Madrid should be in the market for one more young midfielder in the summer 2022 transfer window. Although it is not as much of a priority as right back, Los Blancos are expected to look at options who can start for the team over the next several years.

Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni appears to be at the top of the list, as he could play the “6” role as the first real alternative to Casemiro. On paper, he looks like a perfect fit for what Real need.

However, Tchouameni is not the only Ligue 1 midfielder who should interest Real Madrid. Lyon’s Maxence Caqueret is drawing rave reviews from Madridistas and reporters who cover Ligue 1, including Andres Onrubia of AS.

According to a report from Sebastian Denis of Foot Mercato, Lyon and Caqueret are currently at an impasse in contractual negotiations. The center midfielder and the club are 100,000 euros apart on a monthly salary, with Caqueret requesting 300,000 euros. That’s a significant number for the Ligue 1 side, but it would be easy for Real to afford.

Maxence Caqueret is a high-upside transfer target for Real Madrid

Caqueret has mostly played at the heart of Lyon’s midfield in a holding role, recording 2.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game. He also averages 1.1 dribbles per game and nearly one key pass per game, putting in a lot of the hard work to help the players around him, such as playmaker Lucas Paqueta, shine.

Real Madrid will have options this summer in midfield. Tchouameni is the best defensively and is an effective ball-carrier. But at 22, Caqueret also has a load of upside and is already one of the top midfielders in his league.

If Lyon continue to struggle with keeping Caqueret around, Real could swoop in and sign the player. He could be more affordable than Tchouameni and another quality addition to a Madrid midfield that could still use with one more reinforcement. Imagine Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, and Caqueret all together in the future. That could be one heck of a trio.
