Dortmund ST Erling Haaland

We finish the list with a true Galactico and the best player on the list long-term. More importantly, Erling Haaland is the man Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been pursuing the hardest after upcoming free agent Kylian Mbappe.

Los Blancos have been on the Haaland track as a long-term target since he joined Borussia Dortmund from RB Salzburg and had a 75 million euro release clause inserted into his contract. However, Haaland is much more expensive than that clause, due to the commissions that must be paid to his agent, Mino Raiola, and his father. That does not even account for Haaland’s superstar wages, of course.

Manchester City have the inside track to Haaland, and their advantage may have only increased in light of Real’s blowout loss to one-time Haaland suitors Barcelona. Pep Guardiola has the better short-term sporting project for Haaland, and, unlike Real Madrid with Karim Benzema, his side does not have an elite No. 9 whom the Norwegian would have to co-exist with.

Therefore, Real Madrid fans should consider Haaland unlikely at this point and not someone to get their hopes up for. Haaland has an affinity for Madrid and dreamed of them, but I have a feeling he will think logically and choose City.

Still, Madridismo is a real factor at play here. It is not impossible for Real Madrid to sign him, as he could value the idea of being a Galactico and putting Madrid back on top. But I have a feeling he will help Madrid in a few years after City. Due to the competing factors and even Real’s need to spend on depth rather than splurge on two superstars, I consider Haaland someone Madridistas should not pin their hopes on. It may be better for his career and even for Real if he waits on Los Merengues.
