Sporting CP RB Pedro Porro

I so badly wanted to write about a reunion between Real Madrid and Achraf Hakimi, who should have never been sold in the first place. But alas, hindsight is 20/20 – no pun intended – and there were other circumstances that influenced Real’s sale of Hakimi to Inter Milan at the time. It is just unfortunate the “right of first refusal” did not ultimately matter in the face of PSG’s deep pockets, and now PSG can effectively bar Hakimi from ever joining Madrid. Poorly-run teams love holding players hostage and making enemies with clubs when they lose out on a transfer.

Instead, let’s look at a more realistic and cheaper target in Pedro Porro. Sporting probably don’t want to let Porro go so soon after officially getting him from Manchester City, but they know that he must go.

Real Madrid would have to spend a significant amount of money to sign him, but he would not be onerously priced. 30-40 million euros could get the job done for Porro, and if Real can then sell Alvaro Odriozola to Fiorentina for 15-20 million euros, that difference makes sense when you look at the upgrade Porro provides.

Because not only is Porro younger, he is also better. Odriozola has the speed, but Porro is much better technically and defensively. He is an all-around right back who can start from Day 1.

Real Madrid need to sign someone who can challenge Dani Carvajal’s starting spot – not just be a good backup. As we saw in 2019/20 when Ferland Mendy replaced Marcelo early in the season and became one of the top left backs in LaLiga immediately after being signed for 50 million euros, it is important for Los Blancos to stay ambitious and sign young players who can quickly start.

Porro is that guy. Real Madrid need a top right back, and I don’t think there is a better overall player on the market than Porro. Noussair Mazraoui may be the best value as a free agent, but he seems bound for Barcelona.
