It’s Real Madrid we’re talking about here, especially in the Champions League

I’d have picked a more analytical reason if we were talking about any other club in the world, but one can’t underestimate Real Madrid, simply because they are Real Madrid. When no one thinks they could do the impossible, they go on and do it.

To quote a recent example, PSG downright embarrassed Real Madrid in the first leg. It felt like the team was playing for a draw, and that is as bad as it can get. They kept a deep block, didn’t counter-press, couldn’t keep possession, and ended the game with zero shots on target.

There are games when the team doesn’t dominate on the ball, particularly against teams like Barcelona and Manchester City, but the intention to counter is always there. There’s a big difference between playing defensive and passive football, and the first leg was the very definition of passive.

There was no sporting reason to hope for a comeback, and yet there was. Regardless of their form, Real Madrid comes alive when they smell blood. Especially in the Champions League. There is absolutely no reason to pose Los Blancos as the underdogs going into the tie against Chelsea.

“When everyone thinks we are dead and buried we go and win the Champions League” – Alvaro Arbeloa.

That quote should be enough to instil belief. Tell me I’m wrong, I dare you.
