Real Madrid and Chelsea will renew their rivalry in the UEFA Champions League when they lock horns in the 1st leg of the Quarter-Final on Wednesday night in Stamford Bridge. Last season, these two sides met at the semi-final stage of Europe’s most prestigious club competition, with Chelsea winning the tie 3-1 on aggregate. The London outfit went on to go all the way under Thomas Tuchel’s tutelage, winning the competition for the second time in its history.
Yesterday, Chelsea hosted Brentford and lost the game 4-1. On the other hand, Real Madrid visited the Balaídos to take on Celta Vigo. They narrowly managed to scrape a 2-1, thanks to two penalties from Karim Benzema. However, both teams were far from impressive, even if the results were contrasting.
Chelsea and Real Madrid are two of the very best teams in the world at the moment. These two teams are known to be home to some of the best players in the world. But how would a team comprised of the best set of players from both outfits look like? Well, it would make for a legendary team in an alternate universe.
But, this article allows me to use my imagination and create a combined Chelsea and Real Madrid XI for this season. Let’s see how it looks. I have used my favourite 4-3-3 formation.
Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois
The world’s best goalkeeper at the moment, without any doubt, starts in goal for any team in the world. Thibaut Courtois is saving the blushes for Real Madrid week in, week out. In an evening where every player had a night to forget against Barcelona, the former Chelsea man was the only player to show some desire. Thanks to him, the Catalans could score “only” four goals.
He is quite easily the best player for Los Blancos alongside Karim Benzema, and we can’t help but imagine the absolute shambles the team would be in without the big Belgian’s contributions in every game.
