Real Madrid have been focusing on Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland for a long time now, and it’s somewhat surprising to believe that at one point in time, they actually were interested in other forwards as well. To be fair, they are still interested in Serge Gnabry, but I am talking about players that haven’t been linked to Real Madrid in a long time.

Let’s take a look at what Real Madrid were really interested in a couple of years ago. Nizaar Kinsella, Chelsea correspondent for Goal, talked about Real’s interest in Kai Havertz before the pandemic.

According to the report, Real Madrid made contacts with Bayer Leverkusen about the signing of talented star Kai Havertz before the pandemic started. If it wasn’t for the pandemic, they say, Havertz may have been a Real Madrid player right now. Leverkusen would’ve asked for around 80 million, which wouldn’t have been an issue for the club pre-pandemic. It’s also said that Havertz was a huge fan of what Toni Kroos had achieved at Madrid. Then the pandemic happened…

It’s no secret that the pandemic hit every club hard, but it was a bit worse for fan-owned clubs such as Real Madrid since they did not have wealthy owners to help them out. So because of that, talks were broken down.

Havertz is a fantastic player, but Real Madrid would’ve had difficulty in finding a place for him in the line-up, at least in the present

Now, Havertz’s case is different to a, say, a James Rodriguez, or an Odegaard. Havertz can play in multiple positions, but he is tall enough to start up front as well.

The thing here is that his best position is either up top or just behind the striker. Real Madrid generally go with a 4-3-3, and it would’ve been tough for Havertz to break into the lineup for two reasons. One, well, it’s a 4-3-3, the only place he can play is the striker spot. And number two, the striker spot is occupied by Karim Benzema. That’s quite a pickle.

However, a case could be made against that as well. Real Madrid do not have many players that can offer them offensive production. Adding Havertz into the mix, as a sub or in a secondary position, could’ve changed things and given them options they didn’t know they could’ve had.

And, given Karim Benzema’s age, sooner or later, Havertz would’ve had a shot at the starting spot. He would’ve done well actually. He’s a very good chance-creator, he links up well, passes well, has good vision, can score goals as well. If he is in the right scheme, Havertz is an insanely good player. It’s a shame that a move couldn’t happen.

Havertz is playing well at Chelsea now, he is, in my opinion, one of their best players. He could become one of the best players in the world very soon, and Real Madrid should hope that he doesn’t remind the club of what they missed out on when they face him and his Chelsea on Wednesday.
