3. UEFA (and FIFA) does not want to give up power

UEFA will argue they are protecting the game from the Super League, but they are just concerned about their power in the game. Internally, they might actually be in favor of the Super League and who would be against a competition that sees the best clubs taking on each other almost every week. However, UEFA knows allowing it to happen means giving up not just authority, but also financial power.

With the current Champions League format, UEFA receives a large portion of the finances, whereas the Super League would see the clubs receive most of the revenue generated. Clubs would also be more involved in deciding TV deals, tickets distribution, and venue locations.

Even if UEFA agree to the terms of the clubs and sponsors the Super League, they would still need the approval of the other member federations. Many of whom would not be in favor of seeing their finances and participation in the continent’s top competition reduced, regardless of what the long-term benefits are. Not only will they be against it, but they probably would vote against the current leaders in the next election.

This is why UEFA continues to expand the amount of Champions League participants. The organization will argue they are giving more teams the opportunity to take part, but the reality is that it is just a continued power grab to gain more easy support and for those in charge to remain at the helm. UEFA’s reluctance to give up power and political interest will not allow the Champions League to become the top-tier competitions it needs to be. This further explains why it needs to be the clubs that take the initiative for the Super League to happen.
