Raheem Sterling

I probably would have picked someone else under normal circumstances, but our right-back situation leaves me no choice. Raheem, when he finds space, is one of the most effective wingers in the world. With Carvajal as our right-back, he’s bound to get ample space. He isn’t the most consistent winger in the world, but on his day he’s more than intimidating. He feasts on vulnerable defensive structures. If you recall, City turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead after Sterling was brought on against Real Madrid.

Militao and Alaba cover up the faults in Real Madrid’s structure, but the issues are there. And players like Sterling wouldn’t find it too hard to capitalize on those issues. The last time these two sides met, Varane’s individual mistakes is what cost Real Madrid the tie, but again, the issues were visible.

Per FBRef, Sterling accounts for 10 goals and three assists in the Premier League this season, in 25 appearances. Pretty decent numbers. Valverde needs to start if Carlo Ancelotti has any intention to keep him under control.

Joao Cancelo is an honorable mention. He’s the best full-back in the world for me, but the plan was to include players available over both legs. Lucky for Real Madrid, Cancelo is suspended and would miss the first leg.
