Real Madrid Femenino are still fighting to return to a UEFA Women’s Champions League place for the 2022/23 season, but their first-ever appearance in the competition in 2021/22 was quite the success. After proving they could beat an elite team by eliminating Manchester City in order to enter the competition’s group stages in the first place, they advanced to the knockout stages where they gave the best team in the world, Barcelona, a real run for their money.
Of course, because Las Blancas ultimately fell short and did not quite have the quality or experience that Barcelona do, Madridistas have been hoping for a marquee signing or two in the summer 2022 transfer window.
This past summer, Real already made some important signings, inking the second-most prolific striker in the league in Esther Gonzalez, as well as the league’s next big star, Athenea del Castillo. They have the right foundation in place of players who can grow in stature with the club, however, they need the right superstars with experience to take the next step.
According to a report from FutFem.com, Real Madrid Femenino have already secured one such player – on a free transfer, no less.
Real Madrid Femenino are set to sign Lyon’s Kadeisha Buchanan
Per the site, Las Blancas have already agreed to sign Lyon center back Kadeisha Buchanan on a free transfer this summer.
The Canadian international is one of the best center backs in the world and has years of experience at the highest level. Buchanan has played for the most prestigious women’s team in the world, Lyon, since 2017, earning 76 appearances during that time span. And she is an important player for one of the better national teams on the planet in Canada.
Buchanan is a four-time Champions League winner and a one-time World XI defender. She has the pedigree that no other defender on Real Madrid has – not even their current world-class central defender, Ivana Andres.
At 26 years old, Buchanan is in the prime of her career and can take another step if she leads Real to great success in the coming years. A leader and an all-around excellent center back, Buchanan can form a foundational duo in front of Misa with Andres, giving Las Blancas the dynamic central defensive pairing they have needed.

Let’s see if this deal does indeed get closed this summer, as Madridistas know not to take anything for granted. Elsewhere, the club has eyes on two more major free agent signings, including another star in the French top flight, PSG striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who could replace Kosovare Asllani as the Galactica up top if the Swede were to leave this summer.
