Florentino Perez needs Kylian Mbappe more than Real Madrid does
The Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid transfer saga has been going on for years now, and this year it finally seems to be coming to an end. But there are some latest reports from both Spain and France which suggest that all is not done yet.
According to Mario Cortegana, PSG is still confident about Mbappe’s renewal, following his family’s recent trip to Qatar. Apparently, Mbappe’s entourage will have a meeting with Real Madrid next week, and Cortegana has also mentioned that no agreement has been reached between the Frenchman and Real Madrid regarding his image rights.
This update is a bit worrying, but if there is something in the article that makes me confident, it’s the line that states that “Florentino Perez is still ahead today”.
Even if Real Madrid doesn’t have an advantage as of today, I would be still confident because we have the master businessman, Florentino Perez on this side. He is a man who convinced Barcelona’s star player Luis Figo to join Real Madrid. He is the man who signed all of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Ricardo Kaka, and Xabi Alonso in the same transfer window.
Once the President sets his target, giving up is never an option for him. You see, he’s one stubborn man who is used to winning and getting what he wants. And Mbappe isn’t just a target for him, he is something more. And after seeing this transfer saga all these years, one thing is clear. Florentino Perez needs Mbappe more than Real Madrid does, and Perez won’t rest until the Frenchman becomes a Real Madrid player.
Mbappe isn’t just another transfer target, he is an obsession for Florentino Perez
Real Madrid and Florentino Perez usually never wait for anyone. They present their offer to a player, and they set a deadline. If the player agrees, then the golden days of his career await him at Real Madrid. But if the player doesn’t answer when Real Madrid knocks on his door, then he can consider that his chance is gone, and will have to regret that for the rest of his career. This is something even legends like Sergio Ramos have experienced at the club. I’m not a huge fan of this club policy, but it is what it is, and this is Florentino Perez’s way of dealing with things. After all, he’s an alpha male representing the greatest club in the history of football, so this is something we can expect from him.
But, Florentino Perez waited for Kylian Mbappe, something he has never done. Even when the Frenchman chose PSG over Real Madrid back in 2017, Perez chose to wait for him. Even when PSG was never willing to sell the World Cup-winning forward, the President chose to wait for his contract to expire, so that he can then sign him as a free agent. Despite the unavailability of Mbappe, he chose to delay the actual start of his next project. This approach of playing the waiting game always looked to be a failure, but Perez insisted on waiting. Why?
Because Florentino Perez knew in 2017 itself that this young Frenchman is going to be the next big thing in football, and time has proven that Perez was right about him. The President knew that securing the striker’s signature would be equivalent to securing Real Madrid’s future for the next decade or so. He knows that Mbappe can be the face of Real Madrid, being the world’s best footballer in the future, a position that has been previously occupied by Cristiano Ronaldo. Mbappe would not only win a lot of trophies for Real Madrid but he would also bring a lot of money to the table with his presence alone, being a highly sellable player.
And Perez waited for Mbappe all these years because he knew that Real Madrid is Mbappe’s dream club and he wants to play for Real Madrid at some stage or the other. Mbappe’s playing style and mentality make him a perfect fit for Real Madrid, and the President always knew this.
Mbappe is the face of the galactic project that has been designed by the 75-year-old. The execution of the project began with the signing of Vinicius Jr and other young talents back in 2017, but the main piece, Mbappe, was always missing. And that project should be officially kickstarted this year, with the presentation of Kylian Mbappe at the Nuevo Santiago Bernabeu.
For Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe is another world-class player who has the potential to be the best. They are doing well this season without Mbappe, and with him, in the team, they might do even better. They can survive without him as well, like any other top club. But for Florentino Perez, Mbappe is the whole and soul of his project, and in the process, Mbappe became an obsession for him.
“Mbappe or Nothing”, was the theme of the 2020 and 2021 transfer windows, before Eduardo Camavinga’s signing. In the pandemic situation, Real Madrid chose to not spend a single penny on transfers and rely on free transfers like David Alaba and returning loanees, saving every euro for the possible signing of Mbappe. This approach, when there were other issues of concern that had to be addressed by the club, wasn’t received well by everyone, especially the fans.
This approach from Florentino Perez will be labeled a failure if the signing of Mbappe didn’t take place. It was almost judged as a failure last summer when PSG refused to sell Mbappe, but he managed to silence the murmurs by signing Camavinga. And it didn’t take a lot of time for everyone to understand that PSG never intended to sell Mbappe at any price, and they needed to wait for just 10 more months to see Mbappe in Real Madrid colours. So it didn’t take long for people to calm down, with positive results from the team and brilliant performances from Benzema and Vinicius under Ancelotti giving the fans a lot of reasons to be happy about.
But if Florentino Perez isn’t able to sign Mbappe, the heart of his project, this summer, his project would be immediately branded as a failure by everyone, with the word failure written in bold and capital letters. Even if Perez manages to sign Haaland (which is improbable given that the Norwegian is linked with a move to Manchester City) in place of Mbappe, it would still be a failure.
I’m sure that a legendary President like Florentino Perez wouldn’t want to end his final term as the President with a huge failure. This is the reason why Perez needs Mbappe more than Real Madrid does.
Florentino Perez needs to get one over PSG and Nasser Al-Khelaifi
Florentino Perez has been fighting an uphill battle with UEFA and FIFA, ever since he took on the path of transforming football by introducing the European Super League (ESL). The football organizations have obviously been against the formation of the Super League, though there are eleven other top European clubs showing interest in forming the ESL, with Barcelona and Juventus acting as the leaders.
But there is one big club that opposes the idea of a Super League, a competition that transfers power from UEFA’s hands to the clubs. There are no prizes for guessing the club, and it is Paris Saint-Germain, the current club of Kylian Mbappe. And guess what, PSG’s President Nasser Al-Khelaifi is a member of the UEFA Executive Committee and is also a member of the Organizing Committee for this year’s World Cup that is going to be held in Qatar.
Al-Khelaifi has openly voiced his opinion against the Super League, and it isn’t surprising at all, given his ‘common interests’ with UEFA and FIFA. But by doing so, he became a direct rival to Florentino Perez. And ever since Real Madrid’s bid for Mbappe got rejected by PSG in August 2021, an ego battle has started.

Perez, being the habitual winner he is, would definitely want to win this battle of egos. Real Madrid knocking PSG out of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League was a huge win for the club, but it was a small one for Perez. The actual battle is actually going on, and the best possible outcome for Perez is the scenario in which the European Super League is formed against all the odds, and Kylian Mbappe, PSG’s best player, signs for Real Madrid. That too before the World Cup that is being organized by PSG – excuse me – Qatar.
