Real Madrid fans already know that they have Bayern Munich to thank for signing Toni Kroos for just 25 million euros in what can only be described as one of the best transfers in modern football. Kroos was a top young talent in Bavaria, and he went on to become one of the very best midfielders in the world in Madrid, winning three straight Champions Leagues with Luka Modric and Casemiro alongside him. And he still has a chance at a fourth in 2021/22.

That same 2014 summer he moved from Bayern to Real, though, he was agonizingly close to joining Manchester United instead. At one point, everything was even agreed for the German international to make his way to Old Trafford.

How does Kroos feel about that transfer saga looking back on it?

Well, it’s safe to say he has no regrets.

Here’s what he said in summing up his reflection on moving to Real Madrid eight years ago instead of Manchester United, via the Daily Mail:

"“I don’t have these what-if-thoughts. Because there are no real answers to them. The only thing I can say with certainty is that I probably wouldn’t have won the Champions League three times with Manchester United.”"

Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo can attest that Real Madrid is clear of Man U

That’s clear to see. Because that same year, a Real Madrid player left the club after the World Cup Final, losing to Kroos’ Germany, and La Decima for Manchester United. And Angel Di Maria’s career was never the same again after he went to Old Trafford. He would never capture the limelight or the same success and respect that he did in Madrid. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Robin van Persie, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and now Cristiano Ronaldo are among the titanic footballers who moved to United in recent years and regretted the transfer.

So it’s safe to say that Kroos has no regrets or what-if thoughts. I can just imagine him delivering that quote in the most deadpan way. Because obviously he wouldn’t have won three Champions Leagues at United. He wouldn’t have come close! He would have been slandered and destroyed by a sporting project that isn’t even a sporting project – it is a poorly-run business with cartoonish characters like the Glazers and Ed Woodward.

At Real Madrid, Kroos is wildly successful, incredibly respected, and fits the culture of the club perfectly with his quiet, constant desire for excellence. And Madridistas are forever grateful to both Bayern and United for the fact that Kroos ended up being a serial winner in the Spanish capital.
