Marco Asensio

Marco Asensio arrived at the club as a young player with a lot of promise and he lived up to expectations. The Spaniard delivered moments that were part of every highlight reel you can find on YouTube and was able to do things that could change games in an instant. Then came a very unfortunate moment in any athlete’s career as he tore his ACL and was sidelined for the majority of a season before returning. However, the player who returned is a shadow of the one who Real Madrid signed.

Asensio is still a good player and now has added immense experience to his CV. As the third-highest goal scorer in La Liga for Real Madrid, Asensio has been enjoying his best season in front of goal. However, he has struggled to really deliver anywhere else on the pitch. In the beginning of the season, Ancelotti attempted to play him as a central midfielder but after that failed, the player made the right wing his own. His competition, Rodrygo Goes, continued to fight and was able to take control of the right wing during some matches. However, it was Federico Valverde to really flourished on the right, albeit in a more conservative right wing role. As things stand right now though, Asensio is the third option on the right wing and at least the fourth or fifth option in the center of the pitch.

He has not been able to take full advantages of the opportunities handed to him and with his contract ending in a little over a year, Real Madrid needs to seriously think of how to move forward with him. One thing is for sure: Real Madrid does not want to lose Asensio for free at the end of his contract. Therefore, the only two options now would be to sell him or offer him a new contract this summer. Maybe this is where the two say their final goodbyes?
