Real Madrid is usually the king both on and off the field, including in the transfer market. They have their objectives clear, they get the player they want and sell the player they don’t need. But there has been one player, who hasn’t given in to Real Madrid’s wishes of selling him to another club and has been stubborn about his intention to continue at Madrid. It is none, other than Mariano Diaz.

The club has been trying to sell Mariano for the past three years, but they haven’t been able to do so. His case has been more complicated than Gareth Bale, another highly earning player who didn’t want to leave the club in the past.

But now, Mariano finally wants to leave Real Madrid. According to a report from MARCA, Mariano has communicated his decision to the club, and he wants the club to accept any kind of offer for him this summer.

The wait to sell Mariano has been a long one

Mariano was bought back from Lyon in the summer of 2018, after a great season in France. He was signed to be the backup striker, at the request of Julen Lopetegui.

The club signed Luka Jovic a year later and wanted to sell Mariano, who was surplus to Real’s needs. But Mariano didn’t want to leave the club and chose to respect his long contract at the club, which expires in 2023. He wanted to fight for his spot on the team, and no other club was ready to offer him as much money as Real paid him, to sign him. He didn’t leave in 2019, rejected a move to Benfica in 2020, and even refused a loan move to Rayo Vallecano in 2021.

Looking at his fighting spirit on the pitch and moments like the goal against Barcelona, the fans felt that the club owed him a transfer that works for him. But during the long wait, the fans realised that the only way the club can get rid of him is if he wants to leave, or if he runs down his contract.
