A former Real Madrid Champions League hero is in talks with Barcelona
Real Madrid and Barcelona’s rivalry is one of the most heated rivalries in football, and there are very less players who have played for both the clubs. Legends of the game like Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Michael Laudrup, and Bernd Schuster have played for two of the biggest Spanish club in their careers.
Currently, these two clubs have a non-aggression pact in place, which prohibits one club from signing a contracted player from another club. But this doesn’t prohibit a club from signing a player who has played for its rival club in the past. And now there are rumours which suggest that Barcelona might be looking to sign one such former Real Madrid player.
According to Relevo, FC Barcelona is looking to sign Angel Di Maria, who had played for Real Madrid from 2010 to 2014, on a free transfer. According to the report, the Argentine’s rumoured move to Juventus is on the verge of breaking down, and Barca’s manager Xavi has already spoken with Di Maria regarding a possible move.
This isn’t the first time Di Maria has discussed going to Barcelona
Di Maria has been an excellent player for Real Madrid and has won the La Decima for Real Madrid with his man-of-the-match performance in the Champions League final. Madridistas do recognise Di Maria’s valuable contribution to the club, and still, see him as someone who shouldn’t have been sold by the club.
But Di Maria’s actions suggest that he doesn’t mind disrespecting his former club. He almost joined Barcelona in 2017, but the move didn’t go through, a piece of news that was shared by the Argentine himself.
While this move did make fans question Di Maria’s gratitude to the club, he angered the fans even more by celebrating both of his goals against Real Madrid in a Champions League group stage game in 2019. This action seems somewhat contradictory to his own words back in 2015. Sometimes, these incidents seem to be suggesting that Di Maria is still upset with his bitter exit from Real Madrid after the club refused to give in to his wage demands.

Looking at the past, one shouldn’t be surprised by the fact that Di Maria is on the verge of joining Barcelona. As an individual, he has the right to take his own decision, but he can’t expect the fans of his former club to respect his decision.
