Real Madrid: The reported details of the release clauses in Erling Haaland’s Manchester City contract

Real Madrid’s next star man, who would lead the frontline alongside Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo Goes is currently unknown. Kylian Mbappe didn’t arrive, and he may never be a Madrid player after what happened in the summer, although, you never know.

For Haaland, things are a little different. He chose to go to Manchester City this season, because Karim Benzema is currently in the form of his life. 

As good as Benzema is, he won’t be around forever. I don’t know when he will start declining, but it’s only natural that it happens at some point. I think Benzema would be fantastic for at least two more seasons.

But after that, Real Madrid would need to sign a replacement. And who better than one of the hottest commodities in world football right now? Erling Haaland, in my opinion, will be interested in joining once he knows he’d have a guaranteed spot, so there is a chance Real go for him in the future.

There is a catch, because there always is one. According to Mario Cortegana, there are two release clauses in Haaland’s contract, one of around 200 million euros in 2024, and another of 175 million euros in 2025.

That’s a lot. That’s a LOT.

There is no doubt that Erling Haaland is one of the best players in the world, and will become the best striker in the world in years to come. But, even for him, 200 million, or even 175 million is a lot of money.

For Kylian Mbappe, spending that money made sense. Mbappe is a more multi-dimensional player, and he has the potential to be the best player in the world for a long time. He’s better than Haaland, and more versatile than Haaland as well, which is why it made sense for Real to spend that much money in 2021.

Haaland would bring Real Madrid a lot of goals if he joins in two or three years, that’s for sure. But, here’s the thing: We don’t really know the market for strikers in the next three years. A lot could change in that timespan.

There could be plenty of strikers that could be available for far below that price point in three years, maybe even proven strikers. Of course, none might be as good as Haaland, but it’ll give Real flexibility to be able to sign some more players for different positions.

It’s also worth noting, though, that Real might want to gun for a player that is proven and young, and if Haaland is the best option available for that price point, they probably will go for him. They want to have the best players playing for them, and if Haaland wants to play for them, they will likely go for him once again. It’s likely that we’re at this crossroads of Mbappe and Haaland once again in two or three years.
