Aurelien Tchouameni, Real Madrid’s second transfer of the summer, was finally bought for a massive amount of 80 million euros with 20 million as conditional add-ons after the player opted to arrive in Madrid despite being sought by Liverpool and Paris at the same time.

Tchouameni’s stature and quality speak for themselves. The 22-year-old Frenchman is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the French national team and his former club Monaco, which says a great deal about the fee Real spent for him, however, the situation may be reversed quickly if he fails to perform at his new club.

I say this because if there is one thing we learnt from Eden Hazard’s time at Real Madrid, it is to not expect even the bare minimum, much alone the spectacular. Both of these players joined Real Madrid following world-class seasons at their previous clubs, but we all know how things worked out for Hazard, don’t we?

It’s as straightforward as it gets; Tchouameni will enter next season with a large price tag to justify, and it won’t be long until the same people who like him now turn against him; yet, the odds of that happening appear quite low.
