Ranking Real Madrid’s 5 best Clasico wins of the century
2. 2010/2011 Copa del Rey final
Real Madrid reached the Copa del Rey final where their opponent would be none other than Barcelona. The Copa del Rey was a tournament that eluded the ‘Merengues’ as they had not reached a final since 2004 nor won it since 1993. However, under the guidance of José Mourinho, Real Madrid were determined to lift the elusive title, but it would not be an easy task as they were taking on Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona side which was without a doubt the best team in the game.
If that was not enough, the rivalry between José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola had intensified ‘El Clasico’ and taken it to a completely different level.
Even though the Copa del Rey is generally undervalued by both, it was clear that neither team wanted to lose this game. Despite both sides having clear opportunities to score, neither took advantage of them and the game went into extra time with a 0-0 scoreline.
Then when it seemed it would all be decided on penalties, a brilliant cross from Di Maria found Cristiano Ronaldo who headed it across Pinto to give Real Madrid the lead. The ‘Merengues’ would hold on to the lead and claim the Copa del Rey title against their most bitter rival.
1. 2001/2002 Champions League Semifinals
After eliminating Bayern Munich in the quarterfinal stage, Real Madrid took on Barcelona in the semis. Although ‘Los Blancos’ had finished higher in the league, the first leg was played at the Camp Nou where Real Madrid had not won in any competition since 1993. Along with this, they were missing Luis Figo due to suspension. Although in fairness, that also probably benefited Real Madrid as it reduced the hostility coming from Camp Nou.
Despite the concerns, Real Madrid were in good control of the game, but could not take advantage of their opportunities. However, it would all get better for the ‘Merengues’ in the 2nd half after a wonderful through ball from Raul found Zidane who calmly chipped the keeper to give Real Madrid the lead.

Then when it looked like the game would finish like that, Steve McManaman made it 0-2 in stoppage time to give Real Madrid the victory. Although they drew the return leg, it was enough to seal their spot in the final where they would defeat Bayer Leverkusen to claim their 9th Champions League title.
