Real Madrid: David Alaba reveals which position he wants to play at next season
David Alaba is a wonderful player. I don’t know how many times I’ve randomly looked at Alaba and said to myself, “I love this player to death.” It’s funny to think he only became a Real Madrid player last year. Exactly one year, one day ago, he was presented to the Real Madrid faithful. Time flies.
Alaba’s fit at Real Madrid can be described as a glove to the hand, it’s been so smooth, so good and it seems like he’s been a part of this team for years.
Alaba was a great centre-back for Real Madrid last season, and he came clutch when it mattered most, dropping fantastic performances each time Real played a big team, particularly in the Champions League final, where he was just phenomenal.
All his performances came as a centre-back, and even though he’s a natural left-back, I think he prefers playing in the middle a lot more. His chemistry with Ferland Mendy is amazing, which also allows him to go forward whenever he feels like it.
All that is why David Alaba, according to Relevo, has told Carlo Ancelotti that he wants to continue playing as a centre-back next season, even after the arrival of Antonio Rudiger.
David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger is the best CB pairing Real Madrid have
Now, Rudiger and Alaba are two very different kinds of defenders. Rudiger is the more aggressive one, like Eder Militao, and Alaba keeps his cool and defends the spaces left behind, if any. They’re both fantastic, and I actually think that, contrary to Divyam’s opinion, Alaba should stay as a centre-back.
I mean, he should play as a left-back whenever Vinicius Jr. needs some help in the form of overloads, but that’s only in some cases against some teams, and Mendy is too good defensively to just drop to the bench. I think this defense gives Real Madrid a lot of room for experiments, rotation and it takes away the drop in quality that existed before the arrival of Rudiger.
My preferred defensive line would be Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Ferland Mendy, with continuous rotations among the three centre-backs, which would mean Militao gets significant playing time as well.
Of course, it depends on what kind of opposition Real Madrid are playing. It’s like, if the team is more dominant in the air, then you start Rudiger and Militao as centre-backs. If it’s the usual, then Rudiger / Militao and Alaba. I think that every single player will get a lot of playing time, but I’d want Alaba to stay as a centre-back.

Rudiger, in my opinion, is a better version of Militao, with some differences, of course, and with a lot of rotation, I think Real could go a long way with the kind of defense they have.
