Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro formed arguably the greatest midfield trio in the history of football. They were the foundation to Real Madrid winning four Champions League titles in seven years. Unfortunately, that partnership is going to split up now, as the Brazilian is on his way to Manchester United.

It is safe to say that the move was unexpected. A week back, nobody could have imagined Casemiro leaving Real Madrid this summer. But that’s how quickly things change in football. Manchester United have already confirmed on their official website that they have reached an agreement.

Manchester United are believed to be paying an initial fee of £60 million plus £10 million in add-ons in order to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid. That is a significant fee for a defensive midfielder, who is 30 years of age, and perhaps an offer that was too good to turn down for Los Blancos. On the other hand, the Brazilian’s salary is expected to be almost doubled at Old Trafford. Thus, it is a move that suited all parties involved.

Modric and Kroos have reacted to the departure of Casemiro on Twitter:

It is sad to realize that the three will most probably never play together again. On the other hand, Modric is 36 years of age and Kroos is 32, so one cannot expect them to be playing at the top level for many more years either..

Thus, it will be very interesting to see how Real Madrid shapes up moving forward. They certainly have brought in some exceptional young talent to the club in the form of Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.

The likes of Federico Valverde and Dani Ceballos are also expected to be looking to make their mark, in the absence of Casemiro. So, it is safe to say that things just got a lot more interesting for Real Madrid and the future of their midfield.
