Real Madrid’s midfield suffered a blow with Casemiro leaving for Manchester United this summer. It was a surprising deal to say the least. The Red Devils had been linked with a move for Frenkie de Jong all summer, but after that led nowhere, they ended up swooping in for the 5-time Champions League winner instead. Now, it will be interesting to see Los Blancos’ reaction to the departure.

Real Madrid have been linked with Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg of Tottenham Hotspur as potential replacements for Casemiro. At the same time though, Carlo Ancelotti has hinted that the club could decide to stick with the six midfielders that they already have instead of signing someone.

One of those midfielders is Dani Ceballos, who has struggled for regular playing time at Real Madrid but is a decent option to have in the squad nonetheless.

And while speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Real Madrid want to extend the contract of Ceballos. It is being discussed internally and it is not agreed yet, but it is something that they want to discuss with the player.

It is safe to say that Ceballos is not a starting midfielder for Real Madrid at this point of time. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he made 18 appearances last season and played 338 minutes of football in total.

On the other hand, Real Madrid have some excellent young players in the middle of the park like Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, while legends like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are showing no signs of slowing down either.

Thus, it is hard to see the 26-year-old Spaniard becoming a first-team regular for Real Madrid anytime soon, but it looks like he is a player they want to be part of the squad.
