With just a week left in the summer transfer window, there are a few players Real Madrid will still be looking to move on. One of them is believed to be Mariano Diaz, despite their lack of options up front. The simple reason is that the player has no clear role in this team at the moment and his chances of featuring in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans are slim at best.

Diaz was signed back from Lyon after an incredible season with the Ligue 1 side but it is safe to say that he has not delivered for Los Blancos. He is pretty much on the fringes of the first-team squad, despite Karim Benzema being the only other striker at the club.

Diaz’s current deal with Real Madrid runs out next summer and he will be able to walk out as a free agent then. But it looks like the player might be looking to do that a season earlier.

As reported by AS, Real Madrid does not want to release Diaz, which is the option that the striker is looking for. Los Blancos are still looking for a transfer.

Should Real Madrid allow Mariano to leave as a free agent?

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Diaz made just 11 appearances for Real Madrid last season and played 397 minutes of football in total, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist.

That is not the kind of output that Real Madrid would have been hoping for, when they signed him from Lyon in the summer of 2018 and handed him the number 7 shirt, worn previously by Cristiano Ronaldo.

At this point of time though, one has to question whether it is the right option to let Diaz leave, if Real Madrid won’t sign a replacement this summer. His exit would leave Benzema as the only recognised striker in the squad and that is not an ideal situation to be in. The Frenchman is 34 years of age, and despite his incredible fitness, injuries can happen to any player, even the best in the world.
