Sergio Reguilon had joined Real Madrid’s youth setup back in 2005 and left the club in 2020, in order to join Tottenham Hotspur. Many supporters wanted the Spaniard to be given a proper chance in the first-team after his successful loan spell at Sevilla but he was not and ended up joining the Premier League club instead.

Reguilon made a bright start at Tottenham Hotspur as well but things have gone off the tracks since then, and he seems to be out of the first-team picture under the management of Antonio Conte.

Thus, a return to Madrid seems to be on the cards for Reguilon, but to a different location. As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Reguilon joining Atletico Madrid on loan is a matter of final details and then it will be done.

A lot of Atletico Madrid fans do not seem to be happy about the deal though, considering Reguilon’s history with Real Madrid and that he has never hidden his love for Los Blancos. But Diego Simeone seems unconcerned about that connection.

Simeone dismisses concerns about Reguilon’s connections with Real Madrid

As reported by Mundo Deportivo (via Football Espana), Simeone dismissed that idea that this could be a problem for Atletico Madrid, as the manager said:

"“Juanfran came through at Real Madrid at one point and Filipe, and they are part of the history of our club, Alvaro [Morata] is doing extraordinarily well, Mario [Hermoso] have a lot to us as Champions, [Marcos] Llorente destroyed it.. I look at them as footballers first and foremost.”"

Honestly, it is not a rare instance for a player to represent both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Simeone’s side already have multiple such players.

And with Renan Lodi on his way to Nottingham Forest, they could certainly do with a left-back with the quality of Reguilon, who has represented the Spanish national team and has already proven himself at the La Liga level.

In fact, Real Madrid themselves could do with a left-back at this point of time as they have no real cover for Ferland Mendy, which is the story of several areas on the pitch for Los Blancos right now.
