Real Madrid: Sergio Reguilon’s Atletico Madrid move is not a worry

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid stretches back decades. For years, the two teams in the same city have fought about who has the better team, although, Los Blancos have been superior to the Rojiblancos in every respect for most of Spanish football history.

The rivalry was so intense that the teams even agreed to a non-aggression pact, which stated that no club would directly recruit the other’s players.

Sergio Reguilon, a former Real Madrid player and La Fabrica graduate, recently joined Atletico Madrid on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. Both sets of supporters were not particularly happy with the move. Many Los Blancos fans had even hoped that the Spaniard would eventually be brought back to Santiago Bernabeu one day.

Contrarily, we think that Real Madrid fans should not pay much attention to this transfer and should not be too concerned with Reguilon moving to their city rivals.

Why Real Madrid fans should not be bothered by Reguilon joining Atletico Madrid

Following a solid loan spell at Sevilla in 2019–20, Reguilon was eventually transferred to Tottenham Hotspur the following year since he did not have a clear spot in the Real Madrid squad.

Fans wanted to see Reguilon given a chance, but the club did not feel the same way and he made his way to the Premier League. And the player is still not in Real Madrid’s plans after two average seasons in England.

It is clear that Real Madrid do not require any new faces at left-back, and the position is pretty well set for the foreseeable future. Ferland Mendy is presently the starter there, with whom David Alaba might alternate during this season and for years to come.

After that, if any of the aforementioned players are unable to continue for any reason, the club might potentially bring back Miguel Gutierrez, who is now on at Girona FC. Real Madrid still retain 50% of the player’s contractual rights though. Not to mention, he is getting regular playing time and has already begun to show signs of progress.

Among all of that, Reguilon was not on Madrid’s radar, and considering his lack of progress in the Premier League, bringing him back was always unlikely. In fact, moving to Atletico Madrid would move him even further away from a return to Santiago Bernabeu some day.
