Real Madrid suffer major Reece James transfer blow

Reece James is someone that Real Madrid have been heavily linked with recent months. It is believed that Los Blancos hold a serious interest in signing the Chelsea full-back, who has already established himself as one of the best in the Premier League in his position at just 22 years of age.

It is not hard to understand why Real Madrid might be interested in signing James. He is a fantastic player, who is brilliant going forward and solid defensively as well, so much so that he won a Champions League final while playing in a central defensive role. On the other hand, Dani Carvajal is 30 years of age, while Lucas Vazquez is 31 and a good back up option but not good enough to be a regular starter for Los Blancos at right-back.

Thus, someone like James would be a fantastic signing for Real Madrid but their hopes of bringing him to Santiago Bernabeu have suffered a blow.

As reported by The Athletic, Chelsea have opened talks with James and Mason Mount over new long-term contracts. The club’s new owners have made agreeing an extension with the England duo one of their priorities since taking over.

Thus, it does feel very likely that the club would be able to agree an extension with James, unless something unexpected does not end up happening.

Right-back is a position where Real Madrid will have to strengthen in in the near future and someone like James would have been perfect. Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Englishman and Los Blancos. At the moment, it does feel like him remaining at Chelsea is the most likely outcome.
