The 2022 summer transfer window was a very strange one from Real Madrid to be very honest. Initially, there had been talk about the club making a duel move for Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, two of the best players in the world. Not only did Los Blancos not sign either of them but they focused more on outgoings rather than incomings.

Yes, the club did make two very good additions to the squad in the form of Aurelien Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger. Both of them could end up playing huge roles in Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season.

On the other hand though, a lot of experience and quality departed the club. The likes of Gareth Bale, Isco, Marcelo and perhaps most importantly, Casemiro, are no longer at Real Madrid. Add that to the fact that a number of Real Madrid’s starters are beyond the age of 30 and one could argue that this squad is weaker than it was last season.

Ancelotti though has revealed that the club did not even think twice about making more additions this summer. As reported by Marca, the Real Madrid manager said:

"“We have never thought twice about signing more players.“In terms of departures, we evaluate the situations of Casemiro or [Marco] Asensio, but I’m happy because those who have stayed have always delivered and will do so again this year.“There are many players with only one year left on their contracts, but that’s not a problem.”"

It does feel like Ancelotti is either very relaxed about the situation and confident in his team, or he understood from the very beginning that Real Madrid were not going to make many additions this summer.

Whichever one it is, the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of areas in this squad which could do with more reinforcements but the necessary additions have not been made to it over the course of the summer.

The situation is far from perfect, especially when you consider how many additions Barcelona have made to their squad over the course of the summer, and Xavi’s side might very well be in the running for the top domestic and European titles once again.
