The Positives

Looking back, it was tough, but not impossible, to identify the positives in this transfer saga.

Recently, Real Madrid was able to obtain the signature of one of the world’s top center-backs, Antonio Rudiger. The player was a veteran of Thomas Tuchel’s Champions League-winning Chelsea team before joining Real as a free agent.

Although it would be tough to assess a player when the season has only just begun, it appears that Rudiger has put all of his talents and abilities on show in Madrid and has a good season ahead of him. Unquestionably, his presence has strengthened the defensive line and given the team the opportunity to experiment with various lineup configurations and player combinations.

A further signing was that of Aurelien Tchouameni, who was signed for a reported fee of 80 million euros. Tchouameni was unsteady prior to Casemiro’s departure, but he has risen up significantly after the Brazilian left. Since then, every game he has started has been one of his finest, and he has continued to amass plaudits and admiration from Madridistas.

The above two additions were pretty much it, with the exception of Vinicius Tobias and Iker Bravo, who will play for Real Madrid Castilla this season. Tobias was given the opportunity to play a pre-season friendly with the first team, demonstrating that he has a lot to offer and that his chances remain bright. Iker Bravo, on the other hand, hasn’t been in white yet, although acclaim for the former La Masia graduate has been going about for a while.

Final Verdict

There is a lot of work that needs to be done. Real Madrid grossly failed expectations and ignored the team’s evident flaws. Their attitude was hesitant, something Florentino Perez is not renowned for. The question of what happens if Karim Benzema is unavailable remains unanswered, which is unfortunate given that it should have been the top priority to work on in recent months. The offensive depth is little, but the same cannot be said for the midfield and defence, where Real has plenty of options.

A dismal transfer window when promises were made but never kept. If rated, it wouldn’t go higher than a 5/10.
