This summer, Kylian Mbappe was expected to complete a move to Real Madrid. His contract with Paris Saint-Germain was running out and he was free to leave the club, where he has won multiple domestic honours but has always faltered in Europe. It is also no secret that the Frenchman was a big fan of Los Blancos and Cristiano Ronaldo while growing up.

Thus, many fans believed that a move to Real Madrid was destined to happen this summer. Yet, when the time came, it did not.

Instead, Mbappe went on to sign a bumper new 3-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain, derailing Real Madrid’s transfer plans for the summer. It was a surprise in the eyes of many, who had thought that the Frenchman arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu was a mere formality.

The does not mean that it could never happen though. Mbappe certainly does not seem to be closing the door on it. As reported by Marca, in an interview with the New York Times, when asked about the option of signing for Real Madrid, the French World Cup winner said:

"“You never know what is going to happen.”"

He further went on to add about the Spanish giants:

"“I’ve never been there, but it seems like it’s my home or something like that.”"

Could Mbappe join Real Madrid in the future?

It is safe to say that Mbappe has not signed a long-term contract with PSG. A 3-year deal is pretty much in the middle.

Thus, when it runs out, he will be 26 years of age and pretty much in the prime of his career. On the other hand, it is also very possible that PSG might decide to let him go a couple of years later in order to generate a transfer fee out of his exit rather than potentially seeing him walk out for free.

Thus, it would be a mistake to think that Mbappe will surely not end up at Real Madrid one day because that move is still pretty much on the table.
