The La Liga title race between Real Madrid and Barcelona is expected to be tight this season. The Blaugrana had already shown in the previous campaign that they were on the up once again under the management of Xavi and following a tremendous summer transfer window which saw them sign players like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso and others, they look like a force to be reckoned with.

They momentarily went top of the La Liga table last weekend when they beat Cadiz but Real Madrid won their spot back, after beating Mallorca 4-1.

La Liga is not the only competition that the two sides will be vying for though. They are two of the favourites to win the Champions League as well. Real Madrid are the current holders of the competition while Barcelona definitely have the squad to make a run for it this season, after the disaster that was the previous campaign.

Surprisingly, former Real Madrid star, Rafael van der Vaart, has predicted Barcelona to win the Champions League this season. As reported by Tribuna, he told Ziggo Sport:

"“Barcelona will win the Champions League. It’s just my feeling. It’s actually based on nothing.”"

When it comes to the strongest starting XI, one still has to give the edge to Real Madrid. Los Blancos have a number of players who have proven themselves at every level and most of them are already European champions.

On the other hand, one area that Barcelona are stronger in is their depth. They have multiple options for one position, which is something that Los Blancos cannot say about their squad unfortunately.

Of course, there will be other teams vying for the Champions League as well. One can never count the likes of Bayern Munich, PSG, Manchester City and Liverpool out, even though Jurgen Klopp’s side are going through a rough patch at the moment.
