Once again, Real Madrid did against RB Leipzig, what they do best, and that is find ways to win. The club managed to crop up with two late goals, from Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio, to seal a 2-0 win for Los Blancos and send them clear at the top of their group, with Shakhtar Donetsk drawing against Celtic in the other game.
Valverde just continues to impress. He scored an incredible goal at the weekend against Mallorca and added another great strike to his name against RB Leipzig. On the other hand, Asensio was brought off the bench this time around by Carlo Ancelotti and did enough to merit more chances in the future by scoring a stunner.
That is not the full story of the game though. There is another aspect of it that might get lost owing to the result. And that is how toothless Real Madrid looked going forward for large parts of the game.
With no Karim Benzema leading the line, they did not even have a shot on target for a long time and RB Leipzig had the much better chances in the first half, and should have been ahead if they had been a bit more clinical or anybody other than Thibaut Courtois would have been standing in goal for Los Blancos.
Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig but they also have a big worry
One of the biggest worries that fans had coming out of the summer transfer window is how the club had not signed a real back up to Benzema. And that is showing now, with the Frenchman out injured.
Eden Hazard started the game as a false nine against Mallorca and now Rodrygo did so against RB Leipzig. On neither occasion did the experiment work spectacularly well.
The fact of the matter is that Real Madrid found a way to beat RB Leipzig but might find it more difficult at the weekend against Atletico Madrid in the derby, without a real number nine up front. And this is a problem that could follow them throughout the season, if Benzema struggles with his fitness.
