Marco Asensio’s Real Madrid future is up in the air. He is not a starter for the club and the best role that he can hope for is that of an impact substitute. On top of that, there is less than a year left on his current deal with the club. And there were rumours of him wanting to leave in the summer itself. Thus, all signs point towards the Spaniard leaving in the near future, whether it be January or the next summer transfer window as a free agent.

Where it gets interesting is that one of the clubs that Asensio has been linked with recently is Barcelona. It is rumoured that he is viewed by them as someone who could fit in at Camp Nou.

Naturally, it goes without saying that Asensio switching from Real Madrid to Barcelona would be a very controversial move but it looks like one that cannot be counted out, because when asked about it the Spaniard did not rule it out completely.

As reported by Marca, Asensio told COPE’s El Partidazo:

"“I don’t know if Barcelona want me, to be honest.“A lot of other clubs have come forward.“So I haven’t thought about it [joining Barcelona]. There are a lot of rumours and speculation, that’s normal.“In seven months I can sign for anybody, so it’s normal for clubs to be mentioned, and many more no doubt will be.“I haven’t thought about Barcelona, I haven’t evaluated it. So for now I can’t give you an answer.”"

Could Asensio actually end up at Barcelona after leaving Real Madrid?

Asensio has been at Real Madrid a long, long time and was expected to develop into a superstar for the club.

As we all know, things have not quite turned out as expected and he finds himself as a bench player now, but there will be no lack of demand for his signature if or when he does end up leaving Real Madrid.

The biggest move that Asensio could possibly make is to Barcelona, but one has to wonder if he would even have a role in a team which already has Raphinha and Ousmane Dembele. Interestingly, the Spaniard has also been linked with Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, AC Milan and Juventus.
