Since the launch of the European Super League by Real Madrid and several other top clubs last year, which was met with widespread criticism, UEFA has received massive public reaction as well, with the now infamous event also leading to discussion about the shortcomings of the current European football governing organization.

The leaders of the clubs that created the European Super League, most notably Florentino Perez of Real Madrid, have been at the centre of a storm. But at the same time, fans have raised questions about the alleged corruption inside UEFA and the association’s focus on commercializing football, while many feel that the health of players and the preferences and choices of the fans are disregarded.

Although the truth and reality of the accusations are still being debated, it is reasonable to assume that UEFA has been eager to construct new events in order to appease the top clubs and the fans.

And now, it has been rumoured that one such new competition is once again on the organization’s radar.

UEFA intends to hold a mini-tournament prior to the start of every season and Real Madrid is expected to take part

Several new tournaments have been launched in recent years, including the Nations League, the Europa Conference League, and the reintroduction of the Finalissima. According to a report from David Ornstein in The Athletic, UEFA is considering to hold a new event at the start of every season.

The competition is reported to be contested by four clubs, one of which will be the Champions League winners from the previous season, while the other three would be other high performing European sides.

This new format will be known as the “Opening Tournament,” and it will most likely take the shape of an official competition of preseason friendlies, similar to how the Nations League was incorporated, with the friendlies constituted as an official tournament.

While Real Madrid continues to prepare for all possible outcomes of its dispute with UEFA while also dominating Europe on the same platform, it is worth considering what influence another new competition will have on the fans’ perception of UEFA and what affect this event will have on the health of players who are already playing an incredible amount of football as it is.
