It is safe to say that Real Madrid have a number of players in their squad who do not have a first-team role in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans at the moment, even though they remain important members of the squad. It would not be a stretch to put someone like Marco Asensio in that category, as he is pretty much an exclusive impact substitute these days.

He showed last season what he could do in that role and did so once again against RB Leipzig this season. But the problem is, Asensio has less than a year left on his current deal with Real Madrid and as a result, his time at the club is expected to come to an end soon.

Nobody expects Asensio to sign an extension with Real Madrid, considering his lack of playing time at the moment. And interestingly, one of his most likely destinations appears to be Barcelona.

As reported by El Debate, Joan Laporta told Jorge Mendes that he would talk about Asensio if he arrives on a free transfer. And that is what the Portuguese super agent has done now. He has offered Barcelona the chance to sign him on a five-year contract in January. The Spaniard will be a free agent at the end of the season and move.

This is a transfer that would make a lot of sense for both Asensio and Barcelona, if it does end up coming off.

Barcelona will not have to shell out a transfer fee to sign Asensio and on the other hand, he will get his way out of Real Madrid.

But then at the same time, one has to question whether he will get enough playing time at Barcelona. There are players like Ousmane Dembele and Raphinha already at the club.
