Robert Lewandowski had been linked with a dream move to Real Madrid for years, although it never materialised. He went on to have a stellar career at Bayern Munich though, winning everything possible, before finally making the move to Spain. Yet, it was not Los Blancos that he was joining, but their eternal rivals Barcelona instead.

It is safe to say that Lewandowski has made an incredible start at Barcelona and has been almost scoring for fun in La Liga since arriving. Yet, at one point of time, it was believed that it was a move to Santiago Bernabeu that he had his eyes on.

As reported by Marca, sources close to the Polish striker confirmed to MARCA in 2018 that “Lewandowski’s dream is to play for Real Madrid…”

Well, that dream was never fulfilled and after his recent move to Barcelona, is completely off the table forever. And as reported by SPORT, in an interview granted to the Polish magazine ”Kwartalnik Sportowy”, Lewandowski said about the Camp Nou switch and the links with Real Madrid:

"“When I saw how determined they were to sign me, I knew that this transfer was much more realistic than any of my previous links with Madrid.”"

There is no doubt that Lewandowski is a terrific striker. Arguably the best of his generation. But the timing was never quite right when it comes to a move for Real Madrid.

The goalscoring department at the club was dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo for almost a decade and when the Portuguese legend was in full flow, you never really needed anybody else.

On the other hand, since his departure, Benzema has taken up that mantle expertly and looks set to win the Ballon d’Or himself. Thus, Real Madrid never really needed to move for Lewandowski.

It remains to be seen if the Polish striker can power Barcelona to the La Liga title and make Real Madrid regret their decision not to push for him over the years.
