Ferland Mendy has been able to establish himself as a key part of this Real Madrid team. Yes, there are several question marks over his head going forward. But defensively, the Frenchman might very well be the best left-back in the world. And his limitations moving up the pitch are covered for by the absolute brilliance of Vinicius Jr in the final third.

Thus, Mendy is one of the most important players that Real Madrid have at the moment, especially in the big games, when the opposition are expected to have a go at Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

There is an unexpected concern surrounding Mendy’s future at Real Madrid though, as contract extension talks seem to have hit a road bump. As things stand, his current deal runs out in the summer of 2025.

As reported by AS, Mendy’s requests are above the economic commitment that Real Madrid seem to be prepared to make. Thus, renewal talks appear to be on hold at the moment.

Interestingly, these claims have emerged around the same time that Real Madrid are being linked with a move for Manchester City star, Joao Cancelo, who is adept at playing at both right-back and left-back.

Of course, there is no urgent need for Real Madrid to make a decision on the future of Mendy, because the Frenchman does have a contract with Los Blancos that is believed to run till the end of the 2024/25 season.

But at the same time, he will have a couple of years left on his contract at the end of the current campaign. And as a result, if he is not going to be handed a new deal, then that might be the perfect time to part ways.

The best case scenario though would involve Mendy extending his deal because he is a key part of this side.
