4 players Real Madrid should renew in 2022
3. Luka Modric
Luka Modric is 37-years-old. Many have retired years before turning 37. With his contract ending after already receiving an extension to stay for this season, why would Real Madrid even think about keeping a 37-year-old midfielder in the team when they have so many other younger options in the squad? Because it’s Luka Modric.
Even at this age, what Modric does isn’t explainable. The way he controls the game, how he moves forward and finds the perfect tight spaces to make a pinpoint pass is something that future midfielders will forever be compared to. He is sensational and the team without him simply isn’t the same, such as what was witnessed during their last La Liga game against Osasuna.
For the former Ballon d’Or winner, the choice is simple: If Real Madrid feel he deserves an extension, he will sign it. This is exactly how it was last season and nothing will change by the time the two parties meet at the negotiation table this time around.
Modric still has something to offer and the team is better when he’s a part of it. He has shown that he’s good enough to continue playing at a high level and there is absolutely no reason why he shouldn’t be receiving a new contract soon for at least another year at this club.
After that, they can see where things are at that point and make whatever decision is necessary. But for now, offering Luka Modric a new contract should be dealt with as a priority for Florentino Perez.
