Real Madrid do have some top players at the club at this point of time and perhaps nobody bigger than Karim Benzema. Since Cristiano Ronaldo left Santiago Bernabeu in 2018, the Frenchman has taken up the goalscoring mantle at the club and done a commendable job as well. He is the hot favourite to win the Ballon d’Or this year, after guiding Los Blancos to their 14th Champions League title.

As a result, Benzema certainly deserves his plaudits and a lot more, and it looks like he is set to be rewarded with a contract extension by Real Madrid.

As Fabrizio Romano wrote on Instagram, Real Madrid are now set to reach an agreement with Benzema to extend his contract for one more season. It’s now considered a matter of time as all parties want to get it signed soon. It will be valid until June 2024.

Thus, it looks like Real Madrid are preparing to have Benzema as the main man up front for the next couple of seasons.

It will be very interesting to see how things work out for Benzema moving forward. One has to admit that he has not made the best start to this campaign and has had to deal with an injury as well.

He made his return to the pitch against Osasuna but it was not a happy one as he ended up missing a penalty kick. The game ended 1-1 and Real Madrid dropped down to second in the La Liga table behind Barcelona.

Real Madrid do not have a real back up option to Benzema though. In his absence, Carlo Ancelotti ended up playing Eden Hazard and Rodrygo in the false nine role. Thus, one would expect the Frenchman to play a lot of football this season. Hopefully, at 34 years of age, he can avoid injuries as much as possible.
