Karim Benzema had picked up an injury in Real Madrid’s Champions League opener vs Celtic and it is only recently that he made his return to the pitch. It has not been the most successful of returns though. He ended up missing a penalty kick vs Osasuna in a game that ended 1-1. And then, he drew a blank vs Shakhtar Donetsk in mid week as well.

It must also be pointed out that Benzema had not been on top form before he had gotten injured against Celtic.

Thus, the Frenchman has had his struggles this season while Vinicius Jr has established himself as the most reliable source of goals for Real Madrid. Not many people would have see that coming just a year back but that is just the reality of the situation right now.

Amidst all this, Benzema has been dropped out of the squad that will take on Getafe this weekend. And as reported by Marca, the Frenchman didn’t train with his teammates on Friday in order to stay fresh for the bigger games ahead.

Benzema left out of squad vs Getafe as Real Madrid try to get back to the top of the La Liga table

The club posted on Twitter:

The game vs Getafe is an important one for Real Madrid simply because of the fact that Barcelona went top of the La Liga table following their 1-1 draw vs Osasuna.

It is safe to say that the side from the capital will want to win their spot back as soon as possible and as a result, it is a bit surprising that Benzema was left out of this match.

One has to wonder whether the Frenchman is still feeling the effects of his earlier injury and he has not looked the sharpest in his past couple of appearances.

At the same time though, at 35 years of age, it might not be a bad idea to give Benzema some rest from time to time in order to keep him fresh.
