Toni Kroos dropped another masterclass in the El Clasico against Barcelona, helping guide Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory. The German midfielder was instrumental in the build up to the first goal as he released Vinicius Jr at the perfect moment to send the Brazilian through on goal. And while he could not finish, Karim Benzema made no mistake with the rebound to put Carlo Ancelotti’s side ahead early.

Kroos’ overall play on the day was exceptional as well, as he showed that he is still one of the best midfielders in the world. That is what makes the speculation over his future curious though.

Rumours have spread like wildfire that Kroos is considering retirement at the end of this season when his contract expires. And while he has never made a secret of his desire to retire at Real Madrid, nobody would have predicted for it to come this early.

In fact, it looks like Kroos has been telling his teammates about his plans for a while now. A report from Relevo reads:

"“When this contract ends, I’m leaving.” That phrase has been repeated on many occasions by Toni Kroos (32 years old) in the Real Madrid dressing room. It is not something recent, it is a comment that he made many times last season."

Could the Real Madrid legend actually retire at the end of this season?

Kroos is still just 32 years of age and it is pretty clear that he could play for several more years if he wanted to, as he is still very much at the top of his game.

But the German star has never seemed like someone to hang onto things, and retired from international football very early as well. Thus, it would not come as exactly a surprise if he did hang up his boots for good soon.

In this respect, he is completely opposite to long-time midfield partner, Luka Modric, who seems to be looking to continue playing on for as long as he can.

If Kroos does actually end up retiring at the end of the season then Real Madrid would have a tough task on their hands, replacing one of the best midfielders in history.
