Karim Benzema presented his Ballon d’Or to the Real Madrid fans at the Santiago Bernabeu but unfortunately, he could not take to the pitch vs Sevilla. The Frenchman is believed to be struggling with muscular fatigue at the moment. This is after he had picked up a different injury earlier on in the campaign, in the game vs Celtic and went on to miss several weeks of action.

This season has been stop-start for Benzema and his fitness is becoming a bit of a worry. Set to turn 35 in December, it is safe to say that he can no longer play two games a week on a consistent basis like he used to.

The good news for Real Madrid is that it is a minor issue, but despite that, Benzema will not take part in the game against RB Leipzig in midweek, in the Champions League.

As reported by Real Madrid’s official website, Carlo Ancelotti said about the Ballon d’Or winner’s injury situation:

"“He won’t be fit for Tuesday, but I think he’ll make Sunday’s game. I’m not worried about him because it’s a very minor issue he picked up yesterday. It’s true that he hasn’t had a decent run, but when he is fit and motivated, he remains a very important player for us, although we’ve got such strength in depth that we’ve been able to cover the absence of such an important player. That doesn’t mean to say that Karim won’t be important in the second half of the season.”"

While not a significant issue, this will prevent Benzema from picking up momentum and form, just when it was looking like he was rediscovering his best. One can only hope that the Frenchman will remain fit for a while, after he returns from his latest absence.

The great thing for Real Madrid this season has been that players have stepped up in the absence of Benzema. That was not the case last time around, as we had seen Los Blancos struggle whenever the Frenchman was out of action, including suffering a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Barcelona.

That just goes on to show the progress that this side has made in such a short span of time, with the likes of Rodrygo and Federico Valverde making a huge difference in the goalscoring department.
